Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is a university in Kumasi, Ashanti, Ghana. The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is the public university established in the country, as well as the largest university in Kumasi Metropolis and Ashanti. KNUST has its roots in the plans of King Asantehene Agyeman Prempeh I to establish a university in Kumasi as part of his drive toward the modernization of his Ashanti kingdom. This plan never came to fruition due to the clash between British empire expansion and the desire for King Prempeh I to preserve his Ashanti kingdom's independence. The Kumasi College of Technology offered admission to its first students to the engineering faculty in 1951 (they entered in 1952), and an Act of Parliament gave the university its legal basis as the Kumasi College of Technology in 1952. The nucleus of the college was formed from 200 teacher training students transferred from Achimota in the Greater Accra Region. The college was affiliated with the University of London. In 1961, the college was granted full university status. Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) formerly known as Ghana Technology University College (GTUC), and previously as Ghana Telecom University College (GTUC). GCTU is a public-funded university, owned by the government and founded in 2005. The College has its roots in Ghana Telecom’s flagship Training Centre, which was one of a kind in West Africa. It was first used as a Royal Air Force (RAF) Training School during the Second World War and subsequently handed to Cable and Wireless to train Telecommunications Technicians for British West African Countries ( i.e., Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia). The Training Centre progressed rapidly through deregulation and privatization to become the main source of teaching and certification in Telecommunications Engineering for Ghana Telecom employees as well as other institutions in Ghana and West Africa. In 2005, Ghana Telecom’s management upgraded the infrastructure and equipment to modern standards in preparation for converting the training centre into a university for telecommunication and multimedia engineering & information technology. Accra Institute of Technology, established in 2009, is a non-profit private higher education institution located in the urban setting of the large city of Accra, Greater Accra. Officially accredited/recognized by the National Accreditation Board, Ghana (National Accreditation Board, Ghana), Accra Institute of Technology (AIT) is a small coeducational higher education institution. Accra Institute of Technology (AIT) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as pre-bachelor degrees, bachelor degrees, master's degrees, and doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This HE institution does not have a selective admission policy. The admission rate range is 70-80% making this Ghanaian higher education organization a somewhat selective institution. International applicants are eligible to apply for enrollment. All Nations University (ANU) was established by the All Nations Full Gospel Church (ANFGC), Toronto, Canada through the All Nations International Development Agency (ANIDA). The Progenitor of the vision, Dr Samuel Donkor challenged the African diaspora in North America to support the development of Africa by investing in Human Resource Development through quality higher education. The mission was to develop a new breed of leaders for the continent with a holistic education that emphasizes academic excellence, Christian values, discipline and ethical values in a Christ-centred environment. The government of Ghana readily embraced the idea in 1988, when Dr Donkor sought permission for the All Nations University. But it was not until 1996 that the master plan was presented to the National Accreditation Board (NAB). Upon the advice of NAB, the University was incorporated in April 1996 and subsequently received the authority to establish the All Nations University in May 1996. Catholic University College of Ghana received its certificate of incorporation on 17th August 2001. The University College is affiliated with the University of Ghana, Legon. The National Accreditation Board (NAB) granted CUCG the right to start university programmes in December 2002. Currently, the Catholic University College is also affiliated with the University of Cape Coast for its Bachelor's and Post-graduate degrees as well as Diploma Certificate in Education programmes. The BSc Actuarial Science degree programme will also be awarded by the University of Cape Coast. The first batch of fifty (50) pioneer students of the Catholic University College reported at the Pastoral Centre of the Sunyani Catholic Diocese on 3rd March 2003. The CUCG officially commenced lectures on 10th March 2003 in three Faculties: Economics and Business Administration; Religious Studies; and Information Communication Sciences and Technology. The degree programmes the University started were BSc. Computer Science, BSc. Economics and Business Administration, and BA in Religious Studies. University of Ghana (UG), is a non-profit public higher education institution established in 1948 and located in the urban setting of the large city of Legon (population range of 1,000,000-5,000,000 inhabitants), Greater Accra. This institution has also branch campuses in the following location(s): Korle-Bu, Accra City. Officially accredited/recognized by the National Accreditation Board, Ghana (National Accreditation Board, Ghana), the University of Ghana (UG) is a very large (enrollment range: 30,000-34,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. University of Ghana (UG) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as pre-bachelor degrees (i.e. certificates, diplomas, associate or foundation degrees), bachelor degrees, master degrees, and doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This 69-year-old H.E. institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations and students' past academic records and grades. The admission rate range is 30-40% making this Ghanaian higher education organization a very selective institution. International applicants are eligible to apply for enrollment. UG also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, housing, sports facilities and/or activities, financial aids and/or scholarships, study abroad and exchange programs, online courses and distance learning opportunities, as well as administrative services.
